My dear friend, if we do not learn to sacrifice small differences of opinion, we can never act together. every man cannot have his way in all things. if his own opinion prevails at some times, he should acquiesce on seeing that of others preponderate at others. without this mutual disposition we are disjointed individuals, but not a society.
So let us begin anew—remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us ... Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah—to "undo the heavy burdens ... and to let the oppressed go free."
And if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor, not a new balance of power, but a new world of law, where the strong are just and the weak secure and the peace preserved.
The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.
It's the questions we can't answer that teach us the most. They teach us how to think. If you give a man an answer, all he gains is a little fact. But give him a question and he'll look for his own answers. The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.
Civility is not about dousing strongly held views. It's about making sure that people are willing to respect other perspectives.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Insisting on your rights without acknowledging your responsibilities isn't freedom, it's adolescence.
I am, and always will be, the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes, and the dreamer of improbable dreams.
It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness. That is life.
Those who find praise for an individual who gets up at 5AM to write a bad book rather than the individual who awakes at 9AM to write a good book are mistaking the point of self discipline. It is not the hour we arise that is as important as what we do when we arise.
I'm an educator. My task is not to debunk the crazy ideas of adults, but to establish an education system that is incapable of producing an adult that thinks that way in the first place.
